In Old School RuneScape, Defensive Skills: Defence, Prayer, and Hitpoints, form the core of your character’s durability. Mastering the optimal order for training these skills is not just about unlocking high tier metal platebodies; it is a strategic balancing act between maximizing damage output and minimizing downtime from banking for food. understanding when to prioritize specific defensive milestones can significantly accelerate your account’s progression into high-level PvM and PvP.

This guide details the most efficient path for Defensive skills (Defence, Prayer, and Hitpoints) training, moving beyond traditional grinding to leverage high reward quests for rapid early level jumps. By following an optimized order, you can skip slow early game training while ensuring your character has the necessary durability and health pool to tackle the game’s toughest challenges.

Beginner Training Order

To efficiently reach Level 31 Defence Defence, Level 30 Prayer Prayer, and Level 24 Hitpoints Hitpoints, you should prioritize specific quests that offer massive experience drops. This Quest Skip strategy allows you to bypass hours of low level combat where your character would otherwise be prone to splashing and high food consumption.

Step by Step Priority Order

  1. Witch’s House (Hitpoints): Complete this first to jump your Hitpoints HP to 24. This makes every other quest safer because you can survive more hits. The boss can be easily safespotten with Magic Magic or Ranged Ranged.
  2. The Restless Ghost & Priest in Peril (Prayer): These are short and provide the base levels needed for higher tier content. Completing these unlocks the Morytania region and essential early Prayer Prayer levels.
  3. Merlin’s Crystal: No XP rewards, but required for the Holy Grail quest.
  4. Holy Grail (Defense & Prayer): This is the most efficient quest for early defensive stats. It requires 20 Attack Attack and the completion of Merlin’s Crystal. It provides 15,300 Defence Defence XP and 11,000 Prayer Prayer XP, instantly boosting you past the level 30 milestones for both skills.
  5. Dragon Slayer I (Defence): Once you have 32 Quest Points, this iconic quest rewards Defence 18,650 Defence XP. Combining this with Holy Grail will actually push you past your level 31 goal to roughly Level 40+ Defence Defence, allowing you to wear Rune Armor Rune Armor immediately.

Why this Order?

  • Accuracy: Training Defence Defence manually at low levels is slow because you miss often. Quests grant fixed XP regardless of your combat performance.
  • Protection: Reaching Level 30 Prayer Prayer through these quests puts you only 13 levels away from Protect from Melee Protect from Melee (Level 43), the most important survival tool in the game.
  • Equipment: Level 30+ Defence Defence is a major milestone as it allows you to equip Adamant Armor Adamant Armor, drastically reducing the damage you take from basic monsters.

Advanced Defensive Skills Training Order

In the mid game (roughly Level 30 to 70), your training shifts from quest rewards to methods that emphasize volume. For defensive skills, this means maximizing your Effective HP and using multi target combat to speed up progress.

Defence: The Magic Method

Maniacal monkey

While you can train Defence via Melee (Longsword/Scimitar) by using the defensive style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 4 experience in Defence Defence and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints Hitpoints., the fastest way to level it mid game is through magic AoE attacks.

  • Maniacal Monkeys: Once you have Level 70 Magic Magic and the Ancient Spellbook, you can use Defensive Style while casting Ice Burst Ice Burst on groups of Maniacal monkeys. This gives you massive Defence Defence XP while simultaneously training Magic Magic. This is significantly faster than standard combat because Maniacal Monkeys have a very low Magic defense and spawn in extremely dense groups, allowing your multi target spells to hit up to nine monkeys at once.

Prayer: The Gilded Altar Method

The Gilded Altar Method

The mid game goal for Prayer Prayer is Level 43 (Protection Prayers Protection Prayers) and eventually Level 70 (Piety Piety). Manual training is no longer viable; you must use high quality bones.

Use the bank chest near Camelot Castle in a PvP world when offering bones. It is the closest one to a teleport and within a safe area from player killers. Equip a dust battlestaff, and keep a tinderbox and law runes in the inventory. Withdraw 24 bones and two marrentills, teleport to the house, light the incense burners, and offer the bones at the gilded altar. Use each bone manually at the altar to speed up the process. Teleport back to Camelot and repeat.

  • Method: Offering Superior Dragon Bones Superior Dragon Bones on a Gilded Altar in a Player Owned House or using the Chaos Altar in the Wilderness.
  • The Chaos Altar Advantage: This spot gives a 50% chance to not consume a bone, effectively doubling your XP for the same cost, though it is dangerous due to PKers.
  • Key Milestone: Reaching Level 70 unlocks Piety Piety, the most powerful defensive and offensive Melee prayer.

Hitpoints: Passive Growth

The Maniacal Monkeys method in Kruk’s Dungeon (unlocked upon completion of the Monkey Madness II Quest) is the undisputed king of Hitpoints Hitpoints training for Magic Magic and Ranged Ranged Skills. Because Hitpoints Hitpoints experience is directly proportional to damage dealt (1.33 Hitpoints HP XP per 1 damage point), the rapid, multi target burst mechanics of this cave will catapult your Hitpoints level incredibly fast.

Magic Build can expect up to 150,000 Hitpoints Hitpoints XP/hour (alongside +200k Magic Magic XP). Active Ranged Build utilizing Black Chinchompas can push 250,000–300,000 Hitpoints Hitpoints XP/hour (alongside nearly 900k Ranged Ranged XP).

Final Thoughts

Building a robust OSRS defensive build is about the synergy between protection prayers, high health, and gear accessibility. By starting with the quest skip method to bypass level 1, you set a foundation that allows you to wear heavy armor and use protection prayers much earlier than those who grind manually. This efficiency is the key to transitioning from a fragile beginner to a high level tank.
