OSRS — Best Ranger Leveling & Gear Progression Guide 2026

Mastering the Ranger build in Old School RuneScape is a journey of precision, where the ultimate goal is balancing rapid attack speeds with massive damage potential. Unlike other combat styles, Ranged progression is heavily influenced by your choice of ammunition and weapon speed, making it one of the most versatile and high-DPS (damage per second) options in Gielinor. From the early days of leather armor and shortbows to the endgame power of the Twisted Bow and Masori armor.

A key strategy in this guide is the “Quest-First” approach, which allows you to bypass the slow, initial levels of Ranged training by leveraging high-reward experience drops. By completing essential tasks like Horror from the Deep, you can skip the tedious early grind and jump directly into more effective weaponry like the Dorgeshuun crossbow or Maple Shortboww. This initial boost sets the stage for mid-game power spikes, where gear like Ava’s Devices becomes mandatory for saving ammunition and maximizing efficiency.

The Quest Training From Level 1 To 32

you can reach Level 32 Ranged without firing a single arrow by completing three specific quests. With a specialized “cheese” method for a fourth quest, you can push this to Level 45 rapidly.

The Quest Skip (Level 1–32)

Complete these quests in any order to gain 16,662.5 XP. This bypasses the weakest early-game tiers.

  • Death to the Dorgeshuun: Awards 2,000 XP. requires The Lost Tribe Completion.
  • Horror from the Deep: Awards 4,662.5 XP. Note: This has a mid-level boss fight but can be done without Ranged.
  • Shadow of the Storm: Awards a 10,000 XP lamp that can be applied to any combat skill except Prayer. Using this on Ranged is the fastest way to jump from Level 23 to 32.

Defense Quests

To prepare for the final battle in Dragon Slayer I, you need defensive stats and better gear.

  1. Merlin’s Crystal: No XP rewards, but required for the next step.
  2. Holy Grail: Rewards 15,300 Defence Defence XP and 11,000 PrayerPrayer XP, jumping you to 31 Defence Defence (allowing Snakeskin armour Snakeskin armour) and 28 Prayer Prayer.
  3. Witch’s House: Rewards 6,325 Hitpoints Hitpoints XP, vital for surviving the dragon’s attacks.

Dwarf Multicannon From 32 to Level 45

The Dwarf Multicannon is the fastest way to level Ranged from 32 to 45 because it has a static max hit of 30 regardless of your Ranged level. Because it deals high damage even when your stats are low, you can bypass the early “weak” phase of the skill very quickly.

  • No Level Requirement: While it requires the Dwarf Cannon Quest, you can use the cannon at any Ranged Ranged level.
  • Experience Split: You earn 2 Ranged Ranged XP per 1 damage dealt (half the usual rate) and zero Hitpoints XP.
  • Accuracy: The cannon’s accuracy is determined by your highest active attack bonus, even if that bonus is from Melee gear. To make the cannon hit more often at level 32, wear your best accuracy-boosting gear.

Best Spots for Using Dwarf Multicannon

To maximize your XP per hour, use the cannon in multi-combat zones:

  • South-East of Castle Wars (skogres and zogres): This is the no-strings-attached spot. You can set up your cannon here immediately without any questing, pulling in a solid 47,000 XP/hr. Just be prepared for competition; it’s a popular area, so you might have to hop worlds to find a free patch.
  • Combat Training Camp (Ogres): For a more private spot, head here after finishing the Biohazard quest. Since it’s locked behind a requirement, it’s usually much quieter than Castle Wars, allowing for consistent, uninterrupted grinding.

Efficiency Tips

Cost: Cannonballs are expensive, it is generally recommended to use this method only until Level 45, where Chinning (using Chinchompas) becomes the faster and more cost-effective option.

Active Training: Don’t just stand there; use a Dorgeshuun Crossbow Dorgeshuun Crossbow or Mithril Dart Mithril Darts alongside the cannon to significantly increase your total XP per hour.

Ammunition: Regular Steel Cannonballs are standard, but Granite Cannonballs (max hit 35) can be used for even faster, though more expensive, training.

Gear Progression From Level 1 to 49

Ranged gear progression is defined by “tiers” of Leather and Dragonhide (d’hide) armor, paired with increasingly faster and more accurate bows or crossbows.

Crabs Method From Level 45 to 70

If you’re looking for a low-effort, budget-friendly way to level Ranged, crab grinding is the ultimate AFK strategy. The method is simple: gear up, find a cluster of 2 or 3 spawns, turn on Auto Retaliate, and let your character do the work. Every 10 minutes, the crabs will lose interest; just run a minimap’s distance away and back to reset their aggression.

These monsters are ideal because they have massive health pools but almost zero defense. Here are your five best targets:

  • Gemstone Crabs (The AFK King): Located in Varlamore, these are unique because they have unlimited health and only move every 9 minutes. Since multiple players can hit the same crab, you never have to worry about finding an open world or being “crashed.”
  • Ammonite Crabs: Found on Fossil Island, these have 100 HP. They are excellent but often very crowded.
  • Swamp Crabs (The Ranged Specialist): These have 75 HP and a specific weakness to Ranged attacks. Head southwest of Port Phasmatys for a solid multi-combat spot.

Tip: While these crabs are weak, having Level 30 Defence helps minimize the chip damage you take over long sessions. If you find yourself waiting for respawns, move to a spot with more crabs; if you’re eating too much food, stick to a spot with only two spawns.

Maniacal Monkeys Method From Level 70 to 99

Throwing chinchompas (commonly known as “chinning”) at maniacal monkeys is the fastest way to train Ranged Ranged from level 70 to 99. Maniacal monkeys are located in Kruk’s Dungeon on Ape Atoll, which requires having started chapter II of Monkey Madness II to access. While chinning is much faster than any other methods, it also costs money.

Gear Progression From Level 50 to Endgame

anged gear progression from Level 50 to 85 in OSRS transitions from basic dragonhide sets to endgame powerhouses like Masori armor and high-tier crossbows.

Final Thoughts

Building a powerful Ranger in OSRS is a journey of balancing attack speed with cost-efficiency. Starting with the Quest-First approach isn’t just about saving time; it’s a strategic move to bypass the weakest tiers of weaponry and jump straight into effective tools like the Bone Crossbow. This early foundation gives you the momentum needed to unlock essential utility items like Ava’s Devices, which will be your most important companion for saving thousands of gold in ammunition.
